Parks, malls and promenades in the 19th century allowed bourgeous women to strut their stuff (underneath piles of petticoats, hoop skirts, and ruffles) in front of one another in parades of one-upmanship. Extravagant arriages were useful for this exercise as well, and ladies would pile into them wearing outrageous ensembles. The key was to see and be seen, and keeping up appearances could be quite exhausting!
